Soil investigation by PENETROMETER TESTING using a Cone Penetrometer

A Cone Penetrometer (Kunzelstab) is a tool for testing the density of the soil, which can penetrate as deep as 10 meters. It is used for collecting soil data under the foundation in order to assess the situation. The tool is driven into the soil by releasing a standard 30-kg weight above. Every 20 centimetres, the density (friction) of the soil is evaluated and converted into the bearing capacity that indicates the amount of load the soil can take.


Fix subsidence of buildings and structures

This can be achieved by strengthening the soil by using the Deep Injection Technology offered by Tesla Engineering. The procedure is a long-term solution for adding strength and bearing capacity of the soil by injecting polyurethane which expands to increase compaction and density of the injected layer.

Lift structures

During the soil improvement procedure, when the density of the soil increases, the foundation and the above structure is lifted. The rise of the structure can be detected and controlled with high accuracy by using a levelling laser.

Steps to improve soil strength

  1. First phase: inject to increase compaction and strength which will improve the ability to carry weight of the soil.
  2. Second phase: polyurethane expands to increase density and bearing capacity which will enable the soil to counter the current static load from above.
  3. The operation is carried out to cover the entire area to ensure that the soil improvement is consistent all around.

This procedure is very effective for areas that need to carry more weight and needs a higher bearing capacity of the foundation soil.

Factors causing sunken road surface

Constructions obstructing water ways, fewer recharge areas, transformation of land for residential purposes, all of these factors can cause poor drainage that weakens the soil under the road. Heavy traffic on loose and weak soil will finally lead to road subsidence that puddles in the rainy season. The puddles can be hazardous for accidents and must be fixed as soon as possible.

The polyurethane injection technology is an excellent solution for fixing sunken road problems. The technology features a special polyurethane that can expand as much as 10-20 times which can permeate voids under the sunken concrete road. Repair procedure

  1. Close off 1 lane for safety purposes
  2. Bring the operation truck into the area
  3. Confer and develop plans
  4. Install equipment
  5. Survey the current surface levels
  6. Mark drilling locations
  7. Install levelling lasers
  8. Drill 16-mm holes through the concrete
  9. Prepare a 90-meter injection hose
  10. Perform a trial polyurethane injection
  11. Install injection pipes
  12. Inject polyurethane to lift the surface
  13. Check and regulate the height of rise every 0.5 mm
  14. Identify the surface level after repair
  15. Fill the drill hole and any cracks on the concrete surface with Epoxy mortar

Subsidence of a road at a T-junction causes ponding every time it rains. The water collects in the sunken area, unable to drain properly. The injection of polyurethane was carefully calculated to lift-relevel the surface and allow the water to drain in the right direction, preventing future ponding.
